About the center

Children and youth educational programs are an important and integral part of the «Center of Jewish Life of Bukovina» community.

Since 2020 young shlichim Nisson and Orli Pil have been coordinating and facilitating a variety of educational programs on the base of the community.

«The community programs are attended by people of different ages. I’m in charge of «SmartJ», «Stars» and weekly Torah and holiday classes - these are projects for young people aged between 7 and 30. Our youth actively participate in classes they are familiar with as well as in the brand-new projects. For example, the idea of weekly Torah and holiday lessons was my personal initiative, and the youth of the community fully supported it. Orli coordinates and conducts «EnerJew» project classes - every week she makes interesting interactive lessons on Torah and traditions and creative master classes for the kids. It is very encouraging that we can interest large numbers of children, teenagers and youth and bring them closer to the history and customs of the Jewish people. The youth is the future of our community and our people» says shaliach Nisson Pil.

A number of international Jewish educational projects are implemented in the community. «Stars Ukraine» project meetings are held twice a week and bring together more than 30 young people aged between 17 and 27. The project involves Nison Pil’s classes on the history and traditions of the Jewish people, joint Shabbos and holidays celebrations, a number of educational seminars and trips with Jewish peers from all over Ukraine.

At Nison’s initiative, the youth of the Jewish community gather for the special weekly classes, dedicated to the laws of Torah, important dates and holidays of the Jewish calendar. Once a week, EnerJew classes bring at least 30 boys and girls aged between 13 to 17 together. Along with Orli Pil the project activists learn about Jewish tradition and history, develop creativity and teamwork skills, volunteer and learn more about fascinating people and places of Chernivtsi.

SmartJ Jewish education project is conducted four times a week to provide quality education to the Jewish children. This project was created with the aim of filling the vacuum of Jewish full-time education in a community. The classes are designed to fill the individual needs of each child, helping to broaden their horizons and to deepen the knowledge of the history and traditions of the Jewish people.

For the preschoolers of the community there is a kindergarten «Haya Mushka». Orli Pil is responsible for organizing numerous holidays and events, as well as for holding classes on Jewish traditions for the kids.

About the community

Chernivtsi is one of the the largest cities of Western Ukraine and the center of Bukovina region. The presence of Jews in the city was first mentioned in the XV century. Over the years Chernivtsi became one of the biggest centres of Jewish education, culture and printing in Eastern Europe. Before the World War II, the city’s Jewish population numbered over 45,000.

Today, despite the mass emigration of the Jewish population, the community includes more than 2,000 active members and offers a variety of cultural and educational events.
