About the school

The school is working hard to reach out to Jewish families who are about to enroll their children in secular or non-Jewish schools, in order to convince them to enroll the kids in the Jewish school to let them learn in the atmosphere of Torah traditions without compromising general academic curriculum at the same time.

The Italian education system provides curriculum support for students with a proven psychiatric disability. However, this does not cover the hours of Jewish studies and does not consider children experiencing difficulties, anxiety, a non-native language, or any other problem that requires help and support for the student, teachers, and parents.

Over the past ten years, the number of such cases has increased, and the school is rapidly working to solve this problem.

The school is also working on a project for educational support for teaching Hebrew to those children who are enrolled in school in the middle of the school year without any preparation.

It is also planned to hire a team of two psychologists, one specializing in children under the age of 10 and the other in children aged 11 to 18, to provide proper assistance, as well as four special teachers for the Hebrew study and secular sciences, two in elementary school, and two in kindergarten.

“By improving the quality of our educational services, we will increase the number of children enrolled in school. Without a doubt, individual attention and professional care are essential for a successful school these days” – says Rabbi Igal Chazan, one of the school principals. “We expect to see the results of this implementation already by the end of the coming school year. The results will be evaluated by the various school committees such as the School council formed by parents, teachers, Direction who represent the whole School and the Class Committees.”

About the community

The school was founded in 1958 by Rabbi Gershon Mendel Garelik, the first Shliach (emissary) of the Lubavitcher Rebbe in Italy and in Milan. It was the first religious school in Italy. In those years, it played a huge role in welcoming and educating the children of World War II survivors and many refugees from the Middle East and Iran.

Currently, the school is engaged in education from a very young age, from kindergarten to high school. There is also a Sunday school, a day camp, and social assistance for needy families.“The Merkos” became the first institution in the Diaspora to offer the Bagrut program (officially acknowledged Israeli school education certificate) in cooperation with the Israeli Ministry of Education.

Girls from all over the world are coming to this program, which has been running for eight years now. Our graduates have already excelled in many seminaries and universities in Israel and Italy.
